What is Professional Teeth Whitening?

If you're looking for a safe, effective way to whiten your teeth, you may want to consider professional teeth whitening.

As we age, our teeth become more vulnerable to staining due to food and other substances. Our tooth enamel naturally attracts particles, and products like tea, coffee, tobacco and even berries are notorious for staining teeth.

Bleaching agents used throughout the teeth whitening process are designed to lighten the colour of your teeth and reverse the effects of aging and staining.

How Teeth Whitening Works

Peroxide-based bleaching agents in teeth whitening solutions are designed to lighten the colour of your teeth. As the active ingredient breaks down, oxygen acts on the tooth enamel, creating the whitening effect.

In-Office Teeth Whitening in Lloydminster

At Westlake Dental, we use Epic Gentle Laser Dentistry in our in-office teeth whitening sessions. Within 20 minutes, your smile can be significantly lightened.

This method uses technology which combines thermal energy with focused light for a precise yet gentle dental experience, with less tooth sensitivity and an efficient process.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening in Lloydminster

Our at-home whitening options allow you to whiten your teeth in the comfort and convenience of your home. Custom whitening trays are created specifically for your smile, and your dentist will provide you with thorough at-home instructions to follow throughout your treatment.

Teeth Whitening FAQs

Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions about teeth whitening at Westlake Dental

  • How long do the effects of teeth whitening last?

Teeth whitening is a temporary solution to whiten your smile.

If your teeth are continually exposed to foods and beverages that cause stains, you will likely start to see the whiteness fade after a few months.

If you avoid these foods and drinks following your teeth whitening treatment, you may only require a touchup after a year or so.

  • Does teeth whitening make teeth more sensitive?

One potential short-term side effect of teeth whitening is sensitivity. For most patients, this fades away within a few days following a teeth whitening session.

To reduce any discomfort, we recommend using an anti-sensitivity toothpaste before treatment, and for at least two weeks after your treatment.

  • Do teeth whitening products work on all stains?

We find that yellow and brown-coloured stains respond best to teeth whitening treatments.

Grey, blue and purple coloured stains tend not to be mitigated by teeth whitening at all. For teeth with these types of stains, cosmetic treatments such as dental crowns or veneers may be a better fit.

  • Does teeth whitening work on dental restorations?

No. Teeth whitening is only effective on natural teeth. It will not work on existing dental restorations, such as dental crowns or veneers.

If veneers or crowns are part of your custom treatment plan, you should have your teeth whitened before receiving dental restorations.

  • Will teeth whitening damage my tooth enamel?

If a qualified dentist supervises the use of teeth whitening products, it is very unlikely that your dental enamel will be damaged by the teeth whitening process.

Always consult with your dentist to ensure that you are safely using any teeth whitening products.

  • Does insurance cover the cost of teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is not typically covered by dental insurance, since it is a purely cosmetic procedure with no health benefits for your teeth.
